T-41, High Pressure Laboratory Provo, Utah 84601 Dear Tracy: You have been notified no doubt that the American Physical Society is recognizing the diamond and cubic boron nitride development at General Electric via the APS International Prize for New Materials. As a major contributor on the original team I hope you will join the group at San Diego on 22 March 1977 to receive the award. Herb, Bob, and I have discussed a little bit how the paper, or papers, which are rather expected at the ceremony may be given. Since there are four recipients one way would be to draw lots for one to present a composite paper, and another way would be to divide it into four relatively short topics (somewhat as in the announcement of February 1955). In the case of the four topics the titles might be as follows: (i) Thermodynamics and Phase Reaction Characteristics of Elemental Carbon (FPB?) (ii) Ultra High Pressure, High-Temperature Apparatus for Synthesis of Diamond (HTH?) (iii) The Growth and Properties of Quality Single Crystal Diamond (HMS?) (iv) The Uses of Synthetic Diamond and Cubic Boron Nitride in Industry (RHW?) We shall be happy to receive your ideas and suggestions on this matter so that the presentation can be shaped up well in advance of the meeting. This fall events shaped up in such a manner that Hazel and I did not make the driving trip to the west coast that we had roughly in mind earlier. We did GENERAL® ELECTRIC -2- October 25, 1976 drive to Ohio to visit relatives, friends, Otterbein College and GE Specialty Materials Department. Hazel thinks now that we may shape up a trip around the March San Diego APS event, in which case it might be feasible to steer the return path through Provo in late April.
